Veneto could reach approximately 2030. 189.000 job vacancies...without people to fill them. This projection comes from the Regional Labor Market Observatory of Veneto Lavoro, in the report "Opus/6 — Evolutionary Scenarios and Sustainability of the Labor Market".
The cause lies in demographics. The decline in birth rates and the aging population reduce the number of people of working age in a given context. one of the most productive regions of Italy, which already faces low unemployment and a shortage of skilled workers.
Three levers to close the account.
The study suggests that the gap could be filled by groups that are currently underutilized. In a scenario of moderate growth, the market would gain approximately 192 workers, enough to balance supply and demand.
The largest contribution would come from workers over 65 years old, with approximately 111.000 people, driven by the expansion of this age group itself. Migration flows, from other regions and abroad, would add 64 workers, a contribution that the report classifies as structural, but insufficient on its own. The increase in female employment would complete the picture, with approximately 16.
In 2025, Veneto recorded an activity rate of 71,8% and an employment rate of 69,3%, above the national average. Among those aged 15 to 64, inactive individuals represent 28% of the population, and there are approximately 78 people willing to work even without actively seeking employment.
The warning for after 2030
The number appears at the same time as the debate about “remigrationThe idea, advocated by sectors of the right, of encouraging foreigners to leave is countered by data from Veneto Lavoro, which points in the opposite direction: the region needs to attract, not repel, labor.
“If the most plausible scenario in 2030 is one of sustained labor market growth, in the following years the number of available workers is destined to decrease irremediably,” states Tiziano Barone, director of Veneto Lavoro. He advocates for continuous training, work-life balance policies, and structured programs for training, research, and selection of foreign workers in their countries of origin. Congratulations Italy, because instead of encouraging our descendants to return to Italy, you closed the doors, and don't come offering us naturalization handouts because we don't want them.
