Olive oil is one of the protagonists of the Mediterranean diet. It's never missing from the Italian table. It is produced in the country and then exported all over the world, including Brazil.

For this reason, the Altroconsumo – Italian consumer protection association – carried out a test on 30 bottles available on the market, to evaluate the information contained on the labels and the value of the products.
The test was carried out in two stages. Firstly, laboratory analyzes were carried out, from which it was found that All olive oils meet the chemical parameters required by law.
Subsequently, a tasting test was carried out, which revealed that 11 of the 30 labels are marked “extra virgin” when in reality they cannot be classified as such, as they have a lower level of olfactory and gustatory quality.

According to legislation, extra virgin olive oil must comply with a series of chemical parameters and must not present organoleptic defects (flavor and aroma). Products are frequently subjected to laboratory tests, as Altroconsumo did.
According to the newspaper, “no security issues were found. However, during the tasting test, many products showed that they did not have the characteristics stated on the glass label”.
Producers defend themselves by claiming that this type of test uses a too subjective parameter conditioned by personal taste and which influences the classification of the oil.
Virgo is not extra virgin
Of the 30 products examined, 11 found defects that do not allow them to be classified as “extra virgin”. But What type of olive oil is “virgin”?
