Matera: a romantic city hidden on a hillside
At first glance, Matera looks like a prehistoric city, sleeping on a hillside in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. In fact, because it is so bizarre and even anachronistic, and similar to Jerusalem in Israel, the films Ben-Hur, The Passion of the Christ and Wonder Woman were filmed there.
Matera's particular charm earned it election as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and this year it is European Capital of Culture (a title it shares with Plovdiv, in Bulgaria), having become a much sought after destination for tourists, marveling at the rustic environments of the Sassi, the caves carved in limestone that were once residences of the city's inhabitants.
