The search for Italian citizenship due to Italian descent, it has become increasingly common in recent years. Based on this situation, Lucca, a municipality located in Tuscany, has faced a significant increase in the number of requests and transcriptions of documents related to this procedure.
The municipality extended the period from 30 to 180 days, following the practice of most Italian comunes.
For those wishing to obtain Italian citizenship through descent, the Italian birth certificate is the first and indispensable Italian document for applying for the coveted passport. However, the civil registry office in Lucca has been facing difficulties in handling the significant increase in applications.
Currently, the legal obligation is to complete the process in just 30 days, which has proven to be insufficient given the increase in demand. Meanwhile, at Italian consulates abroad, it can take up to 730 days and involve the payment of fees – 300 euros (about R$1.560,00)
Considering the context and recommendations from the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs to municipalities regarding the importance of maintaining caution and maximum attention in the process of recognizing Italian citizenship, the municipal administration of Lucca has decided to extend the deadline for completing the process of obtaining citizenship by descent and transcribing the relevant documents.
Moreno Bruni, secretary of demographic services, explained to the newspaper La Gazzetta Di Lucca The reason for this measure: The central government has highlighted the importance of caution and attention to municipalities, especially in light of cases of document forgery by people seeking Italian citizenship. We have observed a significant increase in applications, including in Lucca, in recent years, particularly since 2021. Therefore, we consider it appropriate to extend the deadline for offices to complete these specific citizenship recognition procedures, as required by law. In this way, officials will have more time to carry out in-depth analyses without compromising their other daily responsibilities in the civil registry.”
According to him, this extension aims to ensure the recognition of Italian citizenship in accordance with current regulations, avoiding potential irregularities. (Photo: Depositphotos)
