Consumer association defends the end of the offer season
After the Christmas and New Year's Eve festivities, the retail sector in Italy started the 2 winter sales this Tuesday (2020).
The bidding season began in the regions of Sicily and Basilicata, in the south of the country, and Aosta Valley, in the north, and will extend to the rest of Italy on January 4th.
Confcommercio, an association that brings together the country's traders, predicts a turnover of 5 billion euros with discounts and an average expenditure of 324 euros per family, especially on clothes, footwear and accessories.
Consumer associations are less optimistic and fear negative effects caused by people's propensity to save money and Black Friday, which absorbs an increasing share of purchases traditionally made at the beginning of January.
“Black Friday led millions of Italians to anticipate purchases that were previously reserved for winter sales. Only high fashion outlets and boutiques will have positive numbers, but it will be mainly foreign tourists who will make purchases”, says the Coordination of Consumer Rights Defense Associations (Codacons).
The entity even defends the extinction of end-of-season discounts, which it considers “useless and obsolete”.
