The city of Carrara in Tuscany, northern Italy, has announced the first sculpture in the country dedicated to Latin American revolutionary leader Che Guevara (1928-1967).
The monument, entitled “El Che”, will be inaugurated on January 31st in one of the historic areas of the municipality.
The work, made of white Carrara marble, is 2,15 meters high and features an iron image of Che Guevara's face immortalized by photographer Alberto Korda. The sculpture was created by Argentine artist Jorge Romeo.
The project, which began in 2021, was approved by the public and was only possible thanks to a committee coordinated by a compatriot of the honoree and the sculptor, Alfredo Hellman, in addition to the support of local associations and the city hall.
“We started the idea in 2021 and, over the years, other people joined the proposal,” said Romeo.
Gea Dazzi, from the Department of Culture of Carrara, praised the “myth that Che Guevara embodies in the fight against injustice, abuse and for the freedom of the people”.
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as “Che Guevara,” was born in Argentina but became a key figure in the Cuban Revolution that overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista. After leaving Havana, he was captured and executed in Bolivia. (HANDLE)
