Italy must keep borders closed until December to prevent new coronavirus entry
A protected Italy. The country's borders should reopen to foreign tourists only in January 2021. This is what the Minister of Tourism, Dario Franceschini, suggests in an interview with the portal Rai News.
When asked how long the currency closures would last, he said: “it depends on the epidemiological trend and the choices of (European Union) countries”, and was more direct: “there will be no international tourism this year”.
Without a doubt, the tourism sector is among those most affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The government-imposed quarantine caused a collapse in one of the most profitable sectors for the Italian economy.
According to data from Confturism and the Confindustria, entities that represent tourism and industry, respectively, Italy lost around 30 million tourists until May.

Which means almost 90 million less presence in tourist accommodation facilities, in addition to consumption in restaurants and public establishments, in shopping, in local transport, on guided tours.
A little oxygen
And to reverse or minimize losses, the minister announced a plan to promote tourism. The “Travel in Italy” campaign wants to compensate for the drop in international tourists, and thus promote domestic tourism, in view of the upcoming summer in the country.
According to a study carried out by the company Demoskopia, “national tourism” can inject around 20,6 billion euros into the economy.
The entity also estimates that there will be a 30% drop in the number of foreign tourists going to Italy this year. In 2019, the sector had 216 million international visitors. In 2018, around 2,5 million Brazilians visited Italy.
