In 2016, Italy recorded around 1 billion overnight stays in its hotel structures, but 600 million of these were sold on the “black market”, according to the Federation of Italian Hotel and Tourism Associations (Federalberghi).
The numbers were released this Thursday (5) and show the size of the market conquered by alternative hosting sites, such as Airbnb. “Tourists who stay in illegal accommodation and unregulated buildings considerably affect the sector’s economy,” said the entity’s director, Bernabò Bocca.
However, the country's hotel system still recorded more than 400 million overnight stays for the first time. “The [festival of] Epiphany completed the positive picture of the end-of-year holidays, closing a beautiful 2016. But these important results risk being sterile if we do not find a remedy for the plague of illegal accommodation,” added Bocca.
Furthermore, domestic tourism continues to rise in Italy. In the first week of 2017, around 2,4 million Italians will travel across the country.
