Cornetto ice cream, created in Italy, turns 60 in 2019. The flavor was born in the Spica ice cream shop in Naples, which in 1959 coated the inside of a cone with chocolate, to prevent contact between the wafer and the dough, filled it with vanilla ice cream and placed nuts on top.
Since then, Cornetto has become an icon of industrial ice cream and a great Italian brand, famous in every corner of the planet.
Algida, a subsidiary of Kibon in Italy, was founded in 1945 by three Slavic engineers who had acquired a license in the United States for the production of industrial ice cream. Then the factory was transferred to Naples. Unilever, owner of Kibon, made the product industrial in 1964, and the ice cream has now gained gluten-free and vegan versions. To celebrate Cornetto's 60th anniversary, the city of Salerno organized, this Wednesday (30), the “largest ice cream party in the world”, in the hope of entering the Guinness World Records.
