Meloni pays tribute to the 262 victims of the Marcinelle tragedy.

On the 70th anniversary of Marcinelle, Meloni remembers the 136 Italians who died in the Belgian mine and celebrates a new European day of remembrance.

According to AISE, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni paid tribute to the 262 victims of the Marcinelle tragedy on the 70th anniversary of the disaster at the Bois du Cazier mine in Belgium. Among the victims, 136 were Italian emigrants seeking a better life. Meloni stated that Marcinelle “is a symbol of the extraordinary contribution of tens of millions of Italians to the well-being of nations and continents.”

August 8th is celebrated in Italy as the National Day of Italian Labor Sacrifice in the World, created 25 years ago on the initiative of politician Mirko Tremaglia, then Minister for Italians Abroad. The European Parliament approved by a large majority the establishment of the same date as a European Day in memory of victims of workplace accidents, a proposal supported by the Italian government. Meloni emphasized that work should always be synonymous with dignity, rights, and safety.
