According to Sky TG24, Italian President Sergio Mattarella sent a message on the 70th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy, which occurred on August 8, 1956, at the Bois du Cazier coal mine in Belgium, where 136 Italian miners died along with workers of 11 other nationalities. Mattarella stated that the right to work and safety is a "foundational principle" of the Italian Constitution and of all of Europe. The Minister of Labor, Marina Calderone, represented Italy at the commemorations. The President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Massimo Dell'Utri, also participated in the ceremony.

August 8th is the Italian national day commemorating the sacrifice of Italian labor worldwide, and the European Commission, according to the news report, has proposed turning it into a national day.
