According to the RaiNews portal, Italy recorded at least eight deaths of women between July and August 19th in which investigators contested, acknowledged, or are still evaluating the hypothesis of femicide. The victims are Luigia Fortunato, in Marche; Tania Sperindio, in the Rimini region; Dafne Rebaudo, in Rome; Daniela Florea, in Turin; Tania Terrin, in the Venice area; Ornella Forastefano, in Cosentino; Joanna Rouissi, in Colleferro; and Carmela Bifano, whose case is still under investigation. The situation also includes attempted femicides recorded in Sardinia, Calabria, Catania, and the Brescia region.
Italy recently passed a law creating the specific crime of femicide, and the difference between journalistic interpretation and legal classification has become apparent in the first cases. In the case of Luigia Fortunato, 33, who was stabbed 50 times by her husband in Loreto, the Public Prosecutor's Office did not initially charge her with the new crime, and the man was arrested for aggravated voluntary homicide. He confessed. The regional coordination of anti-violence centers in the Marche region classified the death as femicide.
RaiNews states that there is still no official national count for the summer of 2026 and that some procedures remain in the investigation phase.
