According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, a helicopter crashed in Kenya with six tourists and the pilot on board, and there were no survivors. Among the dead is an Italian, Michele Sensi Contugi, 44 years old. He was a well-known businessman in Ecuador and presided over the country's national intelligence agency.
Kenya is one of East Africa's main safari tourism destinations, and helicopter flights are frequently used for travel between parks and areas difficult to access by road. Accidents involving small aircraft in this type of operation are usually investigated by local civil aviation authorities, who determine the technical causes and flight conditions. Corriere della Sera does not detail what caused the crash.
The Italian victim held a state position in Ecuador. National intelligence agencies are government-linked bodies responsible for collecting and analyzing strategic information, generally in areas of internal and external security. The presence of an Italian citizen in this role at an accident in Kenya was highlighted by the Italian press.
