A 56-page guide dedicated to the pet economy arrives seven years after the first edition, published in May 2019. The material is divided into macro-themes: economic framework, veterinary care, health insurance policies, large pet shop chains, new professions, animal tourism, technology, home design for dogs and cats, municipal regulations on beaches and urban living, animal-assisted therapy, the spread of exotic animals, combating abandonment, and changes to the penal code and traffic code, reported the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.

The text notes that the number of animals in Italian homes has grown steadily, along with the food, service, and treatment sectors. It also points to increased debate about animal rights and lesser-known roles, such as rats trained to locate unexploded ordnance and dogs and falcons used to scare flocks of birds away from airports. In the technology sector, it cites everything from smart feeders to drones for finding lost animals.

The guide quotes Jane Goodall, who died at age 94 at the end of last year, remembered for her advocacy for primates. According to the scientist, her favorite animal was the dog, because she "loves unconditionally."
