New data shows that occupancy level reached the highest value in the historical series
Italy's unemployment rate fell below 10 percent for the first time since February 2012, while employment levels reached their highest level in the series since 1977, the National Statistics Institute (Istat) reported on Monday (1st).
The unemployment rate ended the month of May at 9,9%, a drop of 0,2 percentage points compared to April. Among young people aged 15 to 24, the rate fell 0,7 points and reached 30,5%. Currently, Italy has 2,58 million unemployed people.
The employment level in the period rose to 59% of the economically active population, which represents 23,38 million workers.
“The news we read this morning tells us that today is a beautiful day. After being attacked for months by the opposition, I am once again happy to debunk these loudmouths with the facts,” said Minister of Economic Development and Labor and Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, Luigi Di Maio.
He refers to the so-called “Dignity Decree”, which increased compensation for unfair dismissals by 50% and reduced the limit for temporary contracts from 36 to 24 months.
