Italian civil servants' salaries are 33% below the European average

With a monthly average of €1.978, Italian civil servants earn almost a thousand euros less than their European colleagues, according to Eurostat data.

Civil servants in Italy earn an average of €1.978 per month. This is almost a thousand euros less than the average for the European Union, which is at €2.973.

Data from Eurostat and reveal a historic lag in salaries in the Italian public sector. By comparison, civil servants in Germany earn €4.562, while those in Denmark earn €4.500. In France, the average salary is €2.729 — close to the European average.

Despite a 23% increase in the last ten years, the remuneration of Italian civil servants remains far from the standards of the main countries in the bloc.

Salary differences

The difference in salaries is significant. While a German civil servant receives €2.584 more than an Italian, countries like Sweden (€3.700), Ireland (€4.300) and the Netherlands (€3.600) also maintain a significant salary advantage.

At the bottom of the list is Italy, with the lowest value among the countries analyzed.
