Italy finished in 35th position in Global Peace Index 2026, the ranking that measures the safest countries in the world to travel to. The list came out this Monday (15) and repeated the ranking from the previous year, far from the group of the top ten nations.
Iceland comes in first place. Portugal, a destination for a large part of the Italian-Brazilian community In Europe, it secured seventh position and moved up one place compared to 2025.
Italy's position
In this year's ranking, Italy appears just behind Mongolia. Ahead of the peninsula are Norway, East Timor, Qatar, Montenegro, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, Bulgaria, and Estonia.
The index assesses indicators ranging from crime rates to quality of life. The 35th place ranking mirrors Italy's performance from the previous edition, with no improvement or decline.
Who leads the list?
Iceland scored highest across all parameters analyzed, which include internal and external conflicts, military spending, homicide rate, and perceived crime.
New Zealand comes in second, followed by Switzerland in third. Slovenia, Ireland, and Austria complete the top six positions in the ranking.
Portugal in the elite group
Portugal occupies seventh position and gained one place compared to the 2025 ranking. Singapore comes in eighth, but lost one position in the annual comparison.
Finland and Japan round out the top 10, in ninth and tenth positions, respectively. Denmark, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Canada, and Hungary, among other highly rated countries, follow closely behind.
What about Brazil?
Brazil appears in 124st place among the 163 countries evaluated in Global Peace Index 2026, with a score of 2.333 (in the index, the lower the score, the more peaceful the country). It is in the bottom third of the table, far behind Italy, which is in 35th place.
To give the reader some context, the countries ranked around Brazil in the official report are, just below it, Libya (125th), Mozambique (126th), India (127th), and Eritrea (128th). The United States appears in 134th place. Brazil was ranked 124th with a score of 2.333, ahead of Libya (125th), Mozambique (126th), India (127th), and the United States is ranked 134th.
