Speaking a second language is a highly valued skill in the job market, especially in Italy. But how much can being bilingual affect your earnings? A recent study reveals that certain languages are not only in high demand, but can also significantly increase your salary.
A third (33%) of Preply users say they use it for professional growth, and in Italy, the demand for workers with a second language is growing. But which languages are most in demand and which ones offer the highest salaries?
The most profitable languages in Italy
The study analyzed almost 500.000 job advertisements in Italy to determine which languages bring the highest financial returns. The results show that Estonian, along with Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malay, are the most lucrative languages, with an average annual salary of 60.000 euros, almost double the average salary in the country (31.530 euros).
In second place is Korean, with an average salary of around 56.180 euros. Next comes Mandarin Chinese (54.000 euros), Lussemburgish (53.645 euros) and Czech (48.857 euros). So, if you are thinking about learning a new language, these options could be a good investment for your professional future.

The demand for languages in Italy
While a well-paid job is attractive, the demand for specific skills is equally crucial. The study revealed that English remains the most sought-after language in Italy, with 86.785 job vacancies available for fluent candidates. Despite its popularity, English only ranks eighth in terms of pay, with an average salary of €44.081, which is still higher than the average Italian salary.
German comes in second place, with 21.350 available vacancies, followed by French (13.493) and Spanish (10.142). Rounding out the top five is Korean, with 6.700 job offers requiring this language, consolidating its position as the second most profitable language.
Portuguese appears in tenth place, with 948 job offers, showing that the language is also relevant in the Italian market.
