O president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, visited this Wednesday (17) Arsenal da Esperança, a project in São Paulo managed by the Youth Missionary Service (Sermig) of Turin and which welcomes around 1,2 homeless people every day.

“Each person, whether man or woman, represents an unrepeatable and unique heritage in the world, and there is no person who is truly lost,” said the head of state.

According to Mattarella, this was the reason that motivated the project's founder, Ernesto Olivero, and that drives the Arsenal da Esperança volunteers to this day. “Arsenal is a lesson in humanity that serves everyone, to take with them and protect,” added the president, who also called Olivero during the visit.

Mattarella was received by the presidents of Sermig, Rosanna Tabasso, and Arsenal da Esperança, Simone Bernardi. At the end of the visit, a video was shown with a message from the founder.

“Dear president, it was not possible to be with you, but I am present with prayers and my heart. Arsenal has become a small village to give everyone dignity, with the desire for the same thing to happen in the rest of the world. It’s not a dream, it’s possible”, highlighted Olivero.

In São Paulo, Mattarella also visited the Immigration Museum, which, like the Arsenal da Esperança, is located in the former Hospedaria de Imigrantes do Brás, a structure where hundreds of thousands of foreigners – especially Italians – passed between the 19th and 20th centuries.

“We are all a little bit of immigrants”, said the president during his visit to the museum. The head of state has also visited Brasília, where he met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Porto Alegre, where he went to areas affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, and will also travel to Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.
