Brazil has been identified as a potential laboratory for Italian-language culture in South America. This statement was made during a meeting in São Paulo hosted by... Dante Alighieri Society and by Italian-Brazilian Cultural Institute (Icib).
The initiative brought together representatives from the Education Secretariats of São Paulo, Mococa, and Jarinu. The objective of the meeting was to analyze the Italian language training program aimed at teachers in the Brazilian public school system.
The project began three years ago under the scientific coordination of the University of Parma, in Italy. To date, the training has involved 120 teachers assigned to teach the language in the country.
Participants who complete the program receive a B1 level Italian proficiency certificate. The document is issued by the Dante Alighieri Italian Language Project (PLIDA).
The measure aims to establish a stable network of teachers to strengthen the language within the public education system. Brazil is home to approximately 30 million people of Italian descent. and more than 900.000 Italian citizens residing there..
The president of Icib, Marzio Arcari, stated that São Paulo can serve as a model for South America. This view is shared by Andrea Vincenzoni, vice-secretary of the Dante Alighieri Society.
For Vincenzoni, training teachers in the present means building the future of the Italian language. The Dante Alighieri Society has been promoting Italian culture through an international network since 1889.
Icib acts in a complementary way to the Dante Alighieri Society network. The institution focuses on educational and cultural exchange between the two nations.
