Americans investigated in Italian citizenship cases

Dozens of American citizens are under investigation for allegedly obtaining Italian citizenship fraudulently in Benevento, in the Campania region.

The operation, conducted by the Naples Prosecutor's Office, revealed a scheme in which false documents and fictitious residency declarations were allegedly used to secure recognition of Italian citizenship through this criterion. jure sanguinis and, subsequently, the issuing of Italian passports.

According to the article on the Otto Pagine portal, this Tuesday (19), the case also involves five Italian citizens: a former mayor, a public servant, a retired police officer and two representatives of an agency specialized in providing assistance for citizenship processes.

The agency allegedly helped interested parties create false records to support citizenship applications.

The charges include criminal association, document forgery and misuse of computer systems, with crimes occurring between 2017 and 2021.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 27, when it will be decided whether the defendants will be brought to trial.
