“From January 1, 2021, free movement between the European Union and the United Kingdom will end. From this moment on, European citizens wishing to move to the Kingdom will no longer automatically have the right to do so, but will have to apply for a visa in accordance with the procedures established by a new British government immigration system,” it says. the note on the organization's website.
The new UK Immigration System it will become “points-based”, with the aim of treating “people from all parts of the world in the same way”, prioritizing “competence and talent over the person’s place of origin”.
In practice, Italian citizens who wish to study or work in the United Kingdom, and who do not yet live in the country, or who are not covered by the EU Withdrawal Agreement, related to Brexit, will have to meet specific requirements and apply for a visa through the new immigration system.
Also according to the new rules, EU citizens will be able to continue visiting the United Kingdom, without having “to apply for a visa and, in most cases, they will be able to stay in the country for a period of up to six months”.
This exception includes “tourism trips, visits to family and friends, attendance at short courses and business-related activities.
Also according to the note from the Italian embassy, the changes will not affect “the rights of those who have already obtained permanent resident status under the Residency Regime for EU citizens (EU Settlement Scheme). "
