Concerned about the dynamism of the scientific world, researchers decide to return to Italy
For the first time, instead of brains fleeing Italy, they are returning. And the changes brought about by Brexit and Covid-19 are to blame.

Veronica Vinciotti, professor of statistics, and Elisa Postinghel, senior geometry and algebra researcher, have just returned. They came, respectively, from Brunel University London (London) and Loughborough University (Leicestershire).
Both expressed concern about the consequences of Brexit on the dynamism of the scientific world and returned to Italy, joining the University of Trento, in the Department of Mathematics.
Veronica Vinciotti, 44, from Gubbio, graduated in Perugia, lived in London since his doctorate.

“We said goodbye to our London with some tears after 22 years, but happy to start our new adventure in Trento“, He says.
According to her, the change of scenery produced by Brexit is having its effects felt in the university world and in the professions.
“I myself arrived in the United Kingdom thanks to the project Erasmus in 1998, when the opportunity for a doctorate was born and hence the beginning of my academic career in a stimulating environment, in which Brexit has had and will have a negative impact", account.

Elisa Postinghel, 39, born in Rovereto, graduated and master in Trento, with a doctorate from Roma Tre University, arrived in the UK in 2016 after experiences in Norway, Poland and Belgium.
“The UK, where work and student mobility has been secured more than in the rest of the European Union, is in upheaval due to Brexit. Added to this is the economic impact of the pandemic, which has resulted in many British universities having to block hiring and other important spending items. Italy, at the same time, is investing in the so-called 'return of brains', thanks to which centers of excellence such as the Department of Mathematics at the University of Trento are able to attract researchers and teachers from the United Kingdom and other countries”.
Alongside the two teachers who returned from the United Kingdom, there is also Eleonora Anna Romano, 32, from Erice, degree and master in Palermo and PhD in Turin.
Starting in September, he will move his algebraic geometry studies from Poland to Trento, at least for a year.
For better or worse, the coronavirus has succeeded where the numerous uncontrolled measures for brain return have failed: bringing back to Italy most of the 250 thousand young people who went abroad in the last ten years.
