The number of people who obtained recognition from the Italian citizenship grew 4,1% in 2020, according to a report released this Friday (22) by the National Statistics Institute (Istat).
According to the study, 131.803 foreigners became Italian citizens last year, 90% of whom are from countries outside the European Union. Among men, growth was 11,6%, but the rate fell 3% among women.
The data from Istat refer only to citizenship recognitions made in Italy, that is, they do not include procedures carried out in the consular network.
The main countries of origin of new citizens are Albania (28.107), Morocco (18.024), Brazil (7.149), Bangladesh (5.661) and Pakistan (5.629).
The number of Brazilians who became Italian citizens in 2020 fell by almost 34% compared to the previous year. This is mainly due to the reduction of almost 37% in the “others” category, which includes people who certify citizenship by right of blood (jus sanguinis) in Italy's town halls.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Brazilians entitled to jus sanguinis citizenship were no longer able to travel to the European country to carry out the procedure, which is faster than that carried out in consulates.
There were 9.864 recognitions of Italian citizenship for Brazilians in the “others” category in 2019 and 6.246 in 2020. The number of citizenships by marriage fell from 677 to 619 (-8,6%), while by length of residence it went from 221 to 284 (+28,5% ). (Handle)
