9.774 Italian citizenship recognition processes were completed in 2018 in São Paulo.
The Italian Consulate General in São Paulo completed 9.774 citizenship recognition processes in 2018, a 45% increase compared to the previous year.
The information is in the annual report of the Italian representation, which in August became headed by consul general Filippo La Rosa. “Positive news also for those in the long queue for citizenship. Even though the queue is long and the wait gets to 12 years, more than 9 thousand people had their citizenship recognized by the São Paulo Consulate team throughout the year”, said the diplomat in his end-of-year message.

According to La Rosa, this data shows the “commitment” in managing a “workload that remains disproportionate in relation to the forces” of the consulate, which ended 2018 with 238.725 registered Italian residents, a growth of 10,5%.
Furthermore, the representation summoned 27.469 people for recognition of Italian citizenship and issued 17.059 passports – in November, it introduced an appointment system via WhatsApp for this latter service.
The Consulate General of Italy in São Paulo also sent 11.768 declarations of “non-resignation” to Italian city halls (+42%), a necessary step for the recognition of citizenship of residents in the European country, filed 100.021 documents (+33%) and helped around 500 fellow citizens in need or emergency.
“The fellow citizens, who in August were 225 thousand, are now more than 235 thousand. This means that we grew 10 thousand units in just over 120 days. How many grow at this rate? We are offering serious, reliable services to each of them, in accordance with the law,” said La Rosa.
Last year, the consulate also signed an agreement with the City of São Paulo for the teaching Italian in municipal schools and had more than 5 thousand students enrolled in language courses.
