Agreement is a historic reparation between Europe and South America, says Fabio Porta
Going against the Italian left, the coordinator of the Democratic Party (PD) for South America and former deputy, Fabio Porta said that the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur is a historic achievement and deserves support.
In an interview with the Italian agency AISE, Porta said that the agreement is “a courageous and cautious response to the neo-protectionism of US President Donald Trump and the advance of sovereignism in Europe”.
According to him, “the agreement, in fact, was born from multilateralism and free and sustainable trade, including in an innovative way full compliance with international agreements on environmental protection and climate change.”
Porta also stated that this is the largest trade agreement signed by the European Union, and that it is a historic reparation between Europe and South America, in which the EU has deep historical and cultural ties that go beyond the simple commercial relationship.
“The EU and Mercosur countries already hold 25% of the world's GDP and thanks to this agreement, a single market of 780 million consumers will be created. An important opportunity for growth and development for the two bloc countries and their citizens, who will have cheaper access to products with high quality and safety standards”, said the coordinator.
“I am sure that Italy, like all the other countries covered by the agreement, will soon ratify this agreement, which will result in benefits for our country and direct benefits for both companies and consumers, multiplying the already considerable value of trade between our country and the Mercosur countries”, he concluded.
The attitude of the politician from the PD, a left-wing party, goes against the political ideology of the left in the European Union. Parties claim that the continent's agriculture will be decimated by Brazilian competition and that Brazil is destroying the Amazon.
