Roberto Mancini believes that Italy will be at the World Cup in Qatar.
First, your group will have to go through a play off in March, first facing North Macedonia.
If they win, Italy will fight for the place against Portugal or Türkiye.
“We are strong and we will be there for several reasons. We were the best team in Eurocup, we won deservedly; because we have only lost once in the last three years a game in which we were down to 10 players. In the others we were never even close to losing”, explained the Italian coach, in an interview with Journal of Sport.
The coach regretted some missteps in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, namely the two draws against Switzerland, games that ended goalless and in which, curiously, Jorginho missed a penalty in each one.
“I often think about the chances we missed. Winning the first game against Switzerland would have been enough because we dominated. However, I think that during the Euro Cup we also had a bit of luck and it could happen that, sooner or later, things don't go in our favor. That's when we have to do something more. And we will do this in March”, he pointed out.
Still, the coach believes that the Chelsea player deserved the Ballon d'Or.
“Jorginho deserved the Ballon d’Or for what he did with the national team; he was a crucial player for us. I remember the penalty against Spain, not the two he missed, and I see that he continues to score, there are no problems,” he concluded.
