In a post on Instagram, this Friday (24), Senator Mario Borghese stated that the MAIE — Italiani all'Estero Associative Movement — is the only one to defend the rights of Italians living outside Italy.
In the post, made to deny rumors about a possible withdrawal of Italian citizenship due to non-compliance with requirements, the vice-president of MAIE took the opportunity to lament the harsh criticism his movement has been receiving.
"Despite any unfair criticism we may receive, at MAIE we continue to be the only ones defending Italians abroad, working day after day to protect their rights," said Borghese, alongside Representative Franco Tirelli, also from MAIE.
Founded by Italians living in South America, MAIE has had a presence in Parliament since the 2000s and adopts a combative tone on social media.
The movement, however, has faced criticism for maintaining its support for the government of Giorgia Meloni. The Prime Minister has promoted severe changes in the legislation regarding the recognition of Italian citizenship, making it more difficult for descendants living abroad to access it.
Borghese and Tirelli were elected with votes from Italians in South America, mainly in Argentina.

In Brazil, MAIE has lost its main name. The sociologist Daniel Taddone left the group and made public criticisms. For him, it made no sense to remain in a movement that goes hand in hand with a government that has abandoned Italians abroad.
