The Italian deputy Andrea BarabottiThe Lega presented a proposed constitutional law establishing Italian citizenship as a requirement from birth for access to the main positions in the State and Regions.
According to the legislator, the initiative foresees the introduction of an additional requirement to those already existing in the Constitution. The proposal amends articles 63, 84, 92, and 122 of the constitutional text.
The requirement would then apply to the positions of President of the Republic, President of the Council of Ministers, President of the Senate, and Presidents of Regional Governments. (equivalent to the States in Brazil).
In a statement, Barabotti affirmed that the objective is "to strengthen the original and continuous bond with the Nation of those who are called upon to lead the institutions in their most sensitive areas."
The congressman highlighted that the proposal arises in a context marked by "strong migratory flows" and due to a "deep demographic crisis." According to him, this scenario demands additional guarantees regarding the link between those holding the highest positions and the Italian Republic.
Barabotti further stated that the measure seeks to ensure that "the highest institutional responsibilities are entrusted to citizens with a full and original relationship with the Republic."
The legislator defined the proposal as an initiative aimed at protecting the national interest and the stability of institutions.
