Italian renounces citizenship and obtains new passport

In 2019, with the hope of a better future, Riccardo left with a one-way ticket to Lanzarotein Canary Islands. Starting out as a dishwasher, he was warmly welcomed by the local community. There, he met José, whom he married civilly after the legalization of same-sex marriage in Spain.

The Covid-19 pandemic brought challenges, but the couple was supported by subsidies from the Spanish government. They later moved to Tenerife, where Riccardo started again from scratch.

With plans to open a new travel agency, Riccardo decided to renounce his Italian citizenship and become a naturalized Spaniard.

“Italy has never done anything for me. In Capaccio, I always had precarious jobs: I worked in a bar, without a contract, 14 hours a day, for 400/500 euros a month. With many sacrifices, also thanks to my family, in 2018 I managed to open a travel agency, but the experience lasted about a year: the income was barely enough to cover expenses and I would get to the end of the month worried about whether I would be able to continue. And then I had to close. And in Capaccio, I felt judged: I am homosexual and in Italy there is still a lot to be done against prejudices”, Consoli told the Italian portal. Fanpage.

“I decided to renounce my Italian nationality and only have Spanish. The Canaries welcomed me, both the government and the people, no one ever judged me and here I was able to build a future for myself. In Italy, I went ahead only with my own and my family's sacrifices, but both institutions and people rejected me. I have nothing to thank Italy for,” he added.
