The country recorded less than 440 thousand births in 2018

The number of births in Italy fell by 4% in 2018 and reached a new negative record since the country's unification in 1861.

According to the National Statistics Institute (Istat), Italy gained 439.747 new babies last year and saw its population shrink by 124.427 people (-0,2%). The data is based on national records released this Wednesday (3) and confirms provisional statistics published by Istat last February. As of January 1, 2019, exactly 60.359.546 individuals lived in Italy, of which 8,7% were foreigners.

The number of births in the country has seen consecutive drops since 2008 and has been below 500 per year since 2015. Until 2008, the number of births was driven by foreign women, but today the downward trend also involves non-community women – a child born to immigrants In the country you can only become Italian when you turn 18.
