According to Sky TG24, Varenne, an Italian trotting horse born in Copparo in 1995 and considered by many to be the strongest of all time, died at the age of 31. The animal won several titles throughout its career. One of its nicknames was "Capitano".
Varenne twice achieved the Grand Slam of trotting, in 2001 and 2002, by winning the three most prestigious Group 1 races in Europe: the Prix d'Amérique, the Gran Premio Lotteria, and the Elitloppet. Trotting is a type of horse racing in which the horse pulls a light cart with the driver and must maintain a trotting pace, without galloping. Group 1 races are the most technically demanding on the calendar, the equivalent of the finals of an international circuit.
In Italy, Varenne became a household name outside of the sporting world and is considered a benchmark for show jumping in the country, a comparison that, in the popular Brazilian perception, would be closer to that of a serial champion athlete. Copparo, where the horse was born, is in the Emilia-Romagna region.
