According to the newspaper Il Tempo, former Justice Minister Claudio Martelli urged the leader of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, to take a more realistic stance on immigration. In an interview on the program 4 di Sera, on Rete 4, he stated that "no country is able to accommodate everyone" and invoked the legacy of former President Giorgio Napolitano to argue that any serious left needs to address the issue without ideology.

Martelli recalled that the Letta and Renzi governments adopted a more open approach, but that former Interior Minister Marco Minniti took a firm stance on the issue, generating internal controversy. Regarding the center-left coalition, he said there was no common vision even within the PD itself, pointing to disagreements with the Five Star Movement and the AVS alliance.
