According to the ANSA news agency, the price of natural gas closed higher on the Amsterdam market, a benchmark for all of Europe. After the close of European stock exchanges, the methane futures contract for September delivery registered an increase of 1,6%, quoted at 66,4 euros per megawatt-hour. The movement was described as a slight increase.
The Dutch market serves as the main indicator of energy costs on the continent and is the basis for supply contracts in several countries, including Italy. Fluctuations in the price tend to be reflected in household electricity and gas bills and in industrial production costs, especially in energy-intensive sectors. Therefore, this data is closely monitored by European governments and companies.
Futures contracts are purchase and sale agreements with a price fixed at the present and delivery at a later date. In the case of gas, each contract defines the value per megawatt-hour to be paid upon scheduled delivery, allowing buyers and sellers to protect themselves from fluctuations. The indicator cited by ANSA refers to the delivery scheduled for September.
