Portugal has been named "Economy of the Year" for 2025 by the British magazine. The Economist,The publication analyzed the performance of 36 of the world's largest economies and highlighted the country for its strong growth, controlled inflation, and stock market appreciation.
According to the ranking, Portugal leads with GDP growth of 2,4% in the third quarter, low inflation, and a 20,9% increase in the stock market. The magazine also highlighted the growth in tourism and the arrival of wealthy foreigners, attracted by the favorable tax conditions.
“Tourism has grown exponentially, while many wealthy foreigners are moving to the country to take advantage of the low tax rates,” the publication states. “Portugal has managed to combine strong GDP growth, low inflation, and a booming stock market.”
Following Ireland in the ranking are Israel, Colombia, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Greece. The data points to a recovery trend among southern European countries. Meanwhile, economies such as Slovakia, Finland, and Estonia are among the lowest ranked.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed: citizenship is born with the person.

Italy occupies the 16th position on the list.. Although not among the top ten, the country outperformed other major European economies in relative performance.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro celebrated the distinction in a statement published on social media. He stated that the result represents "a just acclamation of the merit and work of the Portuguese people" and reinforces the commitment to reforms that increase competitiveness and job creation.
Government projections indicate growth of 2% in 2025 and 2,3% in 2026. Despite the positive outlook, Portugal faces internal tensions with the general strike scheduled for December 11th. The Order of Economists estimates an impact of up to 700 million euros if half of the workers participate in the strike.

The Constitutional Court's decision changed the landscape. The new citizenship law will now be reviewed by the European Union's courts of justice.
