According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told the New York Times that she hoped for an easier relationship with Donald Trump and that she continues to believe in Western unity. When asked if she would speak with the American president soon, she replied that they would see. On September 4th, Meloni will surpass four consecutive years in office and become the head of government with the longest continuous term in the history of the Italian Republic.

The interview was conducted in Rome and written by journalist Roger Cohen. Meloni attributes her longevity to consistency: she says she imposed on herself the rule of never affirming something she doesn't believe in. She recounts that she joined the post-fascist right at age 15 and states that she doesn't like others telling her what her limits are. A "no," according to her, is among the things that most motivate her.

Regarding the country's international role, Meloni said he rejects the idea of a submissive Italy or one that considers itself inferior to others, and defended what he calls a revolution of pride. Speaking about Italian fascism, he stated that looking at that history today is one thing, and that those who lived through those events probably perceived it differently.
