In September 2023, the Italian-Brazilian banker Daniel Vorcaro, then head of Banco Master, planned to celebrate his 40th birthday with a large party at Sicilia, in Italy.
The event was estimated at US$40 million, approximately R$200 million at the exchange rate at the time. The celebration would require a large-scale logistical operation and bring together 400 guests.
According to documents analyzed by investigators and published by outlets such as O Globo and Folha de S.Paulo, the program included international concerts and accommodations in luxury hotels in the region.
The Coldplay concert would be the main expense.
Expense spreadsheets indicate that the biggest investment would be an exclusive performance by the British band Coldplay.
To secure the show for the group led by Chris Martin on Italian soil, the budget was US$11,4 million, approximately R$60 million at the exchange rate at the time.
Other musical attractions
The stage would be set up in the historic Ancient Theatre of Taormina, one of the most famous locations in Sicily.
In addition to Coldplay, the event was supposed to feature other musical performances.
Andrea Bocelli reportedly received a fee of US$981.
Michael Bublé would receive US$2 million.
David Guetta and Seal reportedly received payments of around US$937 each.
Luxury hotels reserved for guests.
The party was expected to bring together around 400 guests. To accommodate them, Vorcaro booked hotels considered among the most exclusive in the region.
Financial documents indicate a payment of US$1,77 million to the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace. The hotel gained international fame after serving as a setting for the series The White Lotus.
Another US$2 million was allocated to hotels in the Belmond chain, including the Villa Sant'Andrea and the Grand Hotel Timeo.
The party was cancelled.
The party ended up being canceled, according to a report by the Metrópoles news portal.
On the eve of the event, Vorcaro cancelled the celebration in Italy. Part of the money paid was not refunded, and millions more were reportedly converted into credits with the agency responsible for the trip and the event.
According to the report, the cancellation occurred after the banker's daughter's R$15 million birthday party in Belo Horizonte, which featured a DJ Alok performance, went viral on social media. The videos circulated widely and generated criticism about ostentatious displays of wealth.
Bocelli's concert has been rescheduled for another tour.
After cancelling the party in Sicily, Vorcaro decided to maintain the contract with tenor Andrea Bocelli.
The presentation was to take place during a family trip to Jerusalem.
The concert was scheduled for September 8, 2023, one day after Hamas attacked Israel. The event was ultimately canceled again.
