Italian court upholds life sentence for Brazilian man convicted of murder in Udine.

O Trieste Court of Appeal On Saturday, the 7th, the court upheld the life sentence of the Brazilian. Bruno Macchi for the murder of Luca Tisi, a 58-year-old homeless man. The crime occurred in the early morning of April 15, 2023, at the Galleria Alpi in Udine, in northern Italy.

The judges rejected the appeal filed by the defense against the sentence handed down on September 27, 2024, by Udine Court of JusticeThe decision found Macchi, 31, guilty of aggravated murder with premeditated murder due to frivolous motives, cruelty, and the victim's inability to defend herself, according to Ansa.

According to the prosecution, after leaving a bar, the Brazilian returned to his residence to retrieve a serrated knife. He then rode his bicycle to the tunnel of the gallery, where he attacked Luca Tisi while he slept. The man was stabbed 85 times.

After the crime, the defendant allegedly washed himself in a stream, attempted to eliminate traces, and altered his own appearance to hinder identification.

Investigations revealed that images captured by surveillance cameras in the area were crucial in identifying and arresting the perpetrator.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that, hours before the crime, while still in a bar, the Brazilian man had stated to those present that he wanted to kill someone.

The defense presented a different version. According to the lawyers, Macchi was surprised by Tisi while buying cigarettes from a vending machine. The Italian, who was sleeping wrapped in a sleeping bag, allegedly grabbed the defendant by the foot, causing him to react in a state of panic, draw the knife, and inflict the blows.

At the time, the local press classified the episode as "a massacre in four minutes" and described the attack as an act of "unprecedented violence."

Troubled past

Born in a favela in Paulínia, in the interior of São Paulo, Macchi was abandoned by his mother and spent part of his childhood in an orphanage.

Later, he was adopted by an Italian family in Monza, in the Lombardy region. At age 10, however, he was also placed in a foster home by his new family, according to the... Giornale il Tirreno.

In his teens, at age 14, he and a friend started working as gardeners, taking care of the outdoor areas of the place where they lived. The friend later moved to Udine, where he secured a permanent contract with a company in the sector. Macchi also worked as a gardener in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, but without a permanent contract.

As an adult, he was known in Udine for having worked as a waiter in various bars and restaurants in the city.
