The Italian Consulate General in São Paulo has begun initial testing for issuing [documents/certificates]. electronic identity card (CIE). In this initial phase, service was restricted to consulate employees. This measure is part of a gradual rollout of the new service abroad.
The document will be made available to the public soon, according to information confirmed by Consul Domenico Fornara, this Monday (26). during a press conferenceThe issuance will occur in stages, according to him, with priority given to citizens who truly need the document for specific purposes in Italy.
"The appointments are already being made internally, with our employees. In the coming days, we will open the scheduling to the public," he informed.
A Italian identity card It can be useful in situations such as moving to Italy, buying property, or accessing digital services. On the other hand, it does not replace a passport and is not mandatory for travel.
Fornara warned that issuing this new document directly impacts the capacity to process passport applications. This is because both services utilize the same operational structure.
"Each appointment for an identity card means half an appointment less for a passport," he explained.
The production of the ID card will be done in two stages. The consulate handles the initial registration and collects the data. Then, the material is sent to the Italian comune responsible for printing and issuing it to the citizen.
The consul urged caution among the Italian community in Brazil when requesting the new service. The recommendation is that only people with a genuine need should schedule an appointment at this initial stage.
"If we receive thousands of requests from people who just want another ID card in their drawer, we're going to crash the entire system," Fornara warned.
The service is expected to be expanded in the coming months, but will remain contingent on the operational capacity of the consulates and the guidelines of the Italian government.
