In Abruzzo, there is a small town with a peculiar characteristic: a street considered the narrowest in Italy

A Ruetta d'Italialocated in Civitella del Tronto, in the region of Abruzzo, is only 40 centimeters wide. This street, which looks more like a crack in the wall than a street itself, has its origins in medieval times.

During this period, the defense of the city and strategic points was crucial, and secret passages or paths impassable for large groups of armed soldiers were created.

The Ruetta served this purpose, allowing the city's defenders to surprise their enemies from behind. Today, this small street has been preserved and has become a tourist attraction.

Other narrow streets in Italy

Beyond the Ruetta d'Italia, there are other streets in Italy that compete for the title of narrowest.

In Molise, for example, there is the Rejecelle (Vicolo Stretto), in Termoli, 41 centimeters wide.

In Apúlia, Andria has the alley of St. Bartholomew, and in the province of Ascoli Piceno, Ripatransone has an alley that measures 43 centimeters.
