Installation is located on the Camino de São Tomé, a pilgrimage route that connects Ortona to Rome
It seems like a dream. Or rather, miracle. And if it were a miracle, it would be from Saint Thomas, one of Jesus' apostles. But that's just reality: a fountain gushes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Italian wine from Abruzzo, where the Camino de São Tomé, or Cammino di San Tommaso, is located.
Anyone passing through the route that connects Rome to Ortona and who is interested can help themselves. But responsibly, advises the Dora Sarchese Vini winery, which installed the fountain almost two years ago. On its Facebook page, the winery says that the fountain is a way to welcome pilgrims, and that it is not for "drunkards" or a marketing stunt.
The fountain is inspired by one located on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela and, for many, it is a way of trying to raise the Camino de São Tomé to the same popularity.
And it is not the first in Italy to provide wine. In Marino, another fountain spouts wine during its festival. In 2008, however, a plumbing error led to wine that was supposed to come out of the fountain being sent to taps in homes around the town, causing confusion.
