In a move that defies the trend of stricter immigration in the European Union, the Spanish government approved, this Tuesday (14), the extraordinary regularization of almost 500 undocumented immigrantss.
According to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the measure seeks to "recognize the reality" of people who already live and work in the country but remain in the shadows of the law.
Deadlines and schedule
The Minister of Migration, Elma Saiz, explained that the process will be streamlined to avoid bureaucratic bottlenecks:
- April 15th (Wednesday): Publication in the Official Gazette.
- April 16th (Thursday): Start of digital procedures.
- April 20th (Monday): Start of in-person service.
- June 30: Deadline for completing the regularization process.
Act of normalization
Sánchez justified the decision as a matter of social justice and economic sustainability. "It is an act of recognizing people who are already part of our daily lives, so that they contribute on equal terms to our model of coexistence," stated the Prime Minister. The measure is expected to inject millions of euros into the Spanish pension system through new contributors.
The contrast with Portugal and Italy
The Spanish decision arises in the same month in which Portugal approved laws that extend the deadline for obtaining nationality. e Italy He faces protests against decrees that restrict the right to blood.
For Brazilians, Spain is once again an extremely attractive option, especially considering that citizens of Ibero-American countries (such as Brazil) can apply for Spanish nationality after only... two years of legal residence.
