Two-time Formula 1 champion, Emerson Fittipaldi, will be a candidate for the Italian Senate for the Fratelli d'Italia party, in the elections that will be held on September 25th.
The Italian press has already been reporting that Fittipaldi accepted the invitation from the Italian far-right party, after speaking with Giorgia Meloni, controversial leader of the party, who has already declared herself an admirer of former dictator Benito Mussolini.
The former driver, of Italian-Brazilian descent through his father Wilson Fittipaldi, reportedly already has the support of President Jair Bolsonaro. Furthermore, it is said that he will certainly support the re-election campaign of Congressman Roberto Lorenzato, of the Liga party.
Lorenzato won the poll carried out by Italianismo in July, which asked internet users which candidate they would vote for in the September elections, from a list of nine names.
Proposals
At 76 years old, Emerson Fittipaldi's goals are to carry out projects in the sports field, such as the immediate admission of native athletes, without barriers, in all sports championships, aiming to accelerate the process of recognizing the citizenship of these athletes.
Fittipaldi's paternal family came to Brazil from the Trecchina region, in the province of Potenza, Basilicata. A father of seven, if elected he also intends to defend the right of blood to Italian citizenship, which he believes is threatened by left-wing governments.
Furthermore, the former Formula 1 and Formula Indy driver intends to introduce automatic recognition of diplomas of Italian-Brazilians and South Americans in Italy, sign a reciprocity agreement for professional associations such as lawyers and journalists and create an Italian International University to welcome people from all over the world.
