Commission decides which seat in the Italian Senate belongs to Fabio Porta

With 11 votes and 9 abstentions, the Parliamentary Elections and Immunities Committee, of the Italian Senate, decided this Thursday (16) that the vacancy left by Adriano Cario, impeached for electoral fraud, will be Fabio Porta.

Italian-Argentine Francisco Nardelli claimed the position, claiming he received the most votes.

Member of the Democratic Party (PD), Fabio Porta lives in Brazil (he is originally from Sicily) and was elected with votes mainly from Brazil and Argentina – around 21 thousand.

Before that, however, he held the position of deputy in Italian Parliament for two terms, between 2008 and 2018.

It was Porta himself who denounced electoral irregularities in the 2018 election. Around 10 votes contained the same handwriting and the electoral ballots were filled out with the same pen. Expertise from the Italian Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the fraud.

At the beginning of December this year, Italian-Argentine Adriano Cario – son of Calabrian immigrants – was removed from office in a very close vote in the Senate – 132 votes in favor and 126 against.
