In new program, PD "resurrects" Italian citizenship ius soli

Enrico Letta is the new secretary of the Democratic Party. He was crowned with 860 votes in favor, 2 against and 4 abstentions, in the National Assembly held last Sunday (14).

He will therefore be the heir of Nicola Zingaretti, who resigned with a fiery Facebook post.

Letta will have the difficult task of relaunching the PD, given its difficulties at the polls and since the end of the Renzi era in search of a leader capable of guiding it. In a complex era like the current one, the mission is even greater for Italy's largest left-wing party.

In his inauguration speech, Enrico Letta – who was once Prime Minister of Italy – wanted to recite what the main programmatic points that its secretariat intends to pursue: from the electoral law reform à workers' participation in company profits.

Letta also resurrected the Italian citizenship ius soli, the eternal unfinished project of the Democratic Party, immediately provoking the first long-distance confrontation with Matteo Salvini which he commented with a laconic “bad part”.

Enrico Letta also addressed the problem of reduction in birth rate in Italy and the need for full gender equality, also launching the proposal for worker participation, in the wake of the German model, in profits and company decisions.

Understand the difference between ius soli Italian citizenship and ius Sanguinis

Ius Sanguinis guarantees the applicant the right to citizenship of a country through their ancestry, that is, through “right of blood”.

Ius Soli, which means “right of soil” in Latin, guarantees the individual the right to the nationality of the place where they were born.
