O Italian deputy Angelo Bonelli issued a request for clarification to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the attempt by President Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) children to secure citizenship in the country.
Bonelli is from the Green Europe Movement and the Green and Left Alliance.
The information was published by columnist Jamil Chade, on the UOL portal, this Thursday the 10th.
In the official statement, the parliamentarian warns the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that “Senator Flávio Bolsonaro was accused of using ghost employees to inflate his income when he was a state deputy in Rio de Janeiro”, referring to the case of cracks.
Bonelli still warns the Italian government that any citizenship granted to Bolsonaro's family could be used to escape justice in Brazil.
“I asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, a question to find out if the Italian citizenship requested by the children of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will be granted or not,” he said.
The parliamentarian still questions the Italian government if Bolsonaro himself is trying to obtain citizenship. “We asked if the Italian ambassador in Brazil, Francis Azzarello, also received the president's request for a Italian citizenship“, clarified.
“In the question, I recalled that, despite Bolsonaro's closeness to both Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who reaffirmed their support for him in the elections a fortnight ago, he and his party were responsible for the devastation of the Amazon Forest and for the violation of human rights and, therefore, he is on trial for crimes against humanity, with the Brazilian Senate initiating a “state of indictment”, said Bonelli.
“If Bolsonaro had also asked Italian citizenship, there would be a serious risk that the family, in relation to the trials involving the president, would want to use it to avoid being judged by the courts”, he warned. “That would be unacceptable,” concludes Bonelli.
Last Monday (7), just 9 days after Bolsonaro's defeat in the second round of the presidential election, his children went to the Italian Embassy in Brasília to try to advance their citizenship application. If their request is successful, they could legally live in the European country.
“I was elected senator for another four years, I intend to run again and, before crazy theses start circulating, leaving the country is not an option,” said Flávio Bolsonaro. President Jair Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, did not comment on the matter.
