Diplomat replaces Antonio Bernardini, who went to France
Francesco Azzarello is the new Italian ambassador to Brazil. At 61 years old, the diplomat replaces Antonio Bernardini, who had been in the position since July 2016 and was appointed as Italy's permanent representative to international organizations based in Paris, France.
Holding degrees in economics and commerce from Luiss University in Rome, Azzarello entered the diplomatic service in 1986 as head of Arms Control at the Directorate-General for Political Affairs.
“Italy and Brazil are linked by centuries-old human riches and extraordinary economic-industrial, scientific-technological and linguistic-cultural opportunities to be consolidated,” said the new ambassador in an official statement.
During his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Azzarello served in the embassies in Tehran (Iran) and Tirana (Albania), the consulate in Adelaide (Australia), and the Italian permanent representation to the United Nations (UN).
Between 2012 and 2016, he was Italy's ambassador to the Netherlands and permanent representative at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), having even held the position of president of the entity's executive board between 2015 and 2016.
