The Bari Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into a former employee of the Intesa Sanpaolo bank who allegedly “illicitly” accessed almost 7 times the bank accounts of VIP clients, including the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni.
The information was released this Thursday (10) in a report published by the Italian newspaper “Domani”, according to which the prime minister's former partner, journalist Andrea Giambruno, and the president of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, are among those affected.
The former employee allegedly violated confidential data by illegally accessing and monitoring the bank accounts of thousands of clients, including Meloni's sister Arianna, the head of the secretariat of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè, as well as national anti-Mafia prosecutor Giovanni Melillo, Italian military personnel, among others.
According to the publication, the investigation is still ongoing and prosecutors are trying to determine why the employee, who was fired on August 8, accessed such a high number of accounts and monitored “sensitive information” between February 21, 2022 and April 24, 2024.
The investigation focuses in particular on more than 3,5 customers with portfolios from 679 Intesa Sanpaolo branches throughout Italy.
The accounts of the governors of Puglia and Veneto, Michele Emiliano and Luca Zaia, respectively, of the prosecutor of Trani, Renato Nitti, as well as of carabinieri and financial police officers were also allegedly violated.
The investigation began almost by accident, thanks to the work of the bank's security team, who realized something was wrong.
Now, it will be up to the Judiciary and the Privacy Guarantor, where the bank's complaint is pending, to investigate the possible consequences of what happened.
In a post on his X profile, Meloni mocked the report, asking for the “daily dossier”, by publishing a photograph with his sister Arianna and the headline from the Milanese newspaper “Il Giornale”: “Shocking investigation in Bari: the current accounts of Giorgia and Arianna Meloni, Crosetto and La Russa spied on”.
