The recent decision by the Italian government to restrict access to citizenship for foreigners angered a pro-Bolsonaro deputy, who decided to demand action from Lula's Itamaraty.
On Wednesday (16), the deputy Evair Vieira de Melo (PP-ES) filed a request asking for the summoning of the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, to the plenary session of the Chamber to discuss the matter.
The parliamentarian wants to question the chancellor about what the Brazilian government would be doing in relation to the decision of the Italian government, currently led by Giorgia Meloni.
“Brazilian diplomacy has the duty to protect the rights of its people, especially when they are at risk due to measures that disregard historical legacies and legitimate ties. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to take a firm and proactive stance in defending Brazilians affected by this discriminatory and unconstitutional decree, and to present to this Legislative House clarifications regarding the diplomatic measures adopted with the Italian government,” argues Evair Vieira in the request.

At the end of March, Italy tightened the rules for recognizing citizenship for descendants of Italians (iure sanguinis). Under the new understanding, only children and grandchildren of Italians will have the right to apply for citizenship.
The goal, according to the Italian government, is to curb the "commercialization" of the Italian passport and the increase in applications, mainly from South America, where millions of Italians migrated in the 19th and 20th centuries.
"Nationality cannot be a tool to travel to Miami with a European passport," said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani at a press conference after the Council of Ministers approved the new legislation.
