The former Italian-Brazilian congressman and businessman Luis Roberto Lorenzato met this Sunday, 6, with the Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Salvini.
The meeting took place during the Federal Congress of the League party in Florence, in the Tuscany region. The event brought together ministers, governors, mayors and party delegates. Salvini was reappointed as party secretary until 2029.
During the conversation, Lorenzato addressed the Decree Law 36 / 2025 In effect since March 28, the measure imposes new restrictions on the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent. This has caused concern among people of Italian descent living abroad.
Salvini responded with the following statement: “It’s serious, I know. This battle is mine too. We’ll sit down in Rome this week to see how to proceed.”
According to Lorenzato, he highlighted to the vice-premier: “In the conversation I had with Salvini, I told him: 'It's everything you don't want'. It's against what you defend”.
Despite being vice-president of the council of ministers in Giorgia Meloni's government, Salvini did not sign the decree. According to Lorenzato, Meloni herself did not sign it directly either, but her name appears in the text because she is president of the council.
“(Giancarlo) Giorgetti and (Antonio) Tajani were the ones who orchestrated everything,” said Lorenzato, referring to the Economy Minister and the Foreign Minister.
O jus sanguinisThe legal principle that guarantees Italian citizenship based on ancestry has been publicly defended by Salvini on several occasions. Meloni, while still campaigning, promised to protect historical ties with Italian communities outside of Italy.

League Congress
The decree-law on citizenship was not an official topic of the Federal Congress of the League. However, the subject came up on two occasions.
First, in a video appearance, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mentioned the migration issue in her speech:
“We will continue to defend the borders and combat mass illegal immigration, with patient, daily but determined work, which has already made it possible to drastically reduce landings on our coasts”, said.
The League this weekend approved a request for Salvini to return to the Interior Ministry, which is responsible for the country's migration policies. The final decision will be made by the prime minister.
Secondly, during the congress, activists collected around 200 signatures in support of a motion against illegal immigration and the Islamization of Italy.
